New weather maps indicate that snow could blanket parts of Britain next week as temperatures plunge below freezing, with wintry conditions potentially reaching as far south as southern England.
The latest charts, produced using the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS), show snow potentially settling across parts of Scotland by 6am on Wednesday, November 11, while wintry weather could extend much farther south into England and Wales.
Heaviest Snow Expected in Scotland
The maps show the heaviest snow settling across Scotland, particularly over higher ground in the Highlands and central areas. Some locations could see several centimetres lying on the ground, with the WXCharts snow-depth map showing around 4cm in parts of the Highlands.
Elsewhere in Scotland, potential accumulations of around 1cm to 3cm are shown across some central and eastern areas. Smaller patches of snow are also shown farther south, including over parts of northern England and Wales.
Wintry Weather Could Reach Southern England
A further WXCharts map suggests the wintry weather could reach considerably farther down the country. The Winter Overview chart shows a band of potential snow and wintry precipitation stretching from Scotland through northern and central England.
Wintry conditions are also shown across parts of Wales, while the band continues further south. The wider Winter Overview map suggests snow or other wintry weather could stretch much farther south through Britain, reaching areas well away from the main Scottish snow zone, with conditions shown as far south as southern England.
Temperatures to Drop Below Freezing
The wintry spell could also bring a sharp drop in temperatures, with another GFS map showing sub-zero conditions across a large part of Scotland. The six-hour minimum temperature chart shows lows of around -1C to -2C in some Scottish locations by 6am on November 11.
Temperatures are also shown hovering around freezing elsewhere in Scotland and northern England, while much of England and Wales could see lows of around 1C to 3C. However, the maps are long-range computer model projections, meaning the exact location, timing and amount of any snow could change as the date gets closer.
