Scotland is set to experience a dramatic temperature swing, with forecasts indicating a plunge to as low as 7C in some areas by July 22, following a weekend hot spell that could reach 29C. The latest data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), supplied by WX Charts and reported by the Mirror, suggests a significant cooldown after what STV weatherman Sean Batty called the "best spell of the Scottish summer" so far.
Weekend Heatwave Peaks at 29C
According to Sean Batty, Dumfries is expected to be one of Scotland's hottest spots this weekend, with temperatures forecast to climb to 29C on Friday, July 10. Other areas, including Moffat, Glasgow, and Dalbeattie, will enjoy highs of 27C in the late afternoon. Stirling, Cumnock, and Jedburgh should expect highs of 26C. However, this warmth is set to be short-lived.
Temperature Plunge by July 22
The ECMWF forecast indicates that by the morning of July 22, some parts of Scotland could wake up to temperatures as low as 7C. Weather maps for the same period show much of Scotland shaded blue, indicating temperatures are forecast to be below the seasonal average. While long-range forecasts become less reliable the further ahead they look, the data points to a noticeable change in conditions, with cooler air expected to replace the recent warmth.
Areas Likely to See Sub-10°C Temperatures
The areas that could see temperatures below 10C include Caithness, Sutherland, Ross-shire and Cromartyshire, Inverness-shire, Nairnshire, Morayshire, Banffshire, Aberdeenshire, Angus, Perthshire, Kinross-shire, Clackmannanshire, Argyllshire, Stirlingshire, Dunbarton, Lanarkshire, Dumfriesshire, West Lothian, Midlothian, East Lothian, Peeblesshire, Selkirkshire, and Roxburghshire.
Immediate Forecast and Weekend Outlook
The Met Office forecast for Thursday, July 9, states: "Cloud and rain remains across northwest Scotland. Otherwise, dry and largely clear, though low cloud and fog pushing inland again into parts of the west. A warm night for many." Their weekend forecast adds: "Sunny spells emerging in the far northwest as cloud moves southwards into other areas of Scotland." Meanwhile, the BBC warns that western Scotland will often remain cloudier from Friday through Sunday, with some light rain possible and a chance of thundery showers developing on Friday. Eastern coastal areas are expected to feel cooler due to an easterly breeze.
