Weather maps have predicted when temperatures in Scotland will rise to 26°C after a cooler weekend. According to the Met Office, temperatures are set to spike again on Thursday, July 16, in parts of southern Scotland.
Record Heat Earlier in the Week
On Friday, July 10, the Met Office recorded a high of 29.7°C in Threave, Dumfries and Galloway. This sizzling temperature was also seen elsewhere across the country, with Tyndrum in the Highlands reportedly hitting 27.9°C and Glasgow rising to 27.4°C.
While many Scots enjoyed the warm weather, the weekend brought cooler and cloudier conditions, with many parts of the country experiencing showers overnight and some areas in the north east seeing lightning on Friday evening.
Weekend Weather Split
On Saturday, July 11, temperatures were split across the country according to the Met Office. Weather maps show that while Cumnock and Dumfries in the south of Scotland still enjoyed highs of 24°C, the Highlands and Grampian experienced much cooler weather, with temperatures only reaching 15°C in Aberdeen and 14°C in Wick.
Sunday, July 12, saw temperatures become more aligned around the 20°C mark, but forecasters warned that cloudy conditions could make these temperatures feel cooler.
Forecaster's Comments
Meteorologist Alex Deakin said: "A chance of showers over the Grampians, but most places becoming drier following a wet morning. A drier day over the Highlands on Saturday compared to Friday. We should see some spells of sunshine coming through across the west coast and down to the southwest as well. Not as hot here as Friday. Generally mid to high teens, particularly where it's cool from the breeze coming in from the sea and where the cloud remains fairly thick."
He continued: "As we start Sunday, a lot of cloud around but most places will be dry. Showers should be fairly few and far between on Sunday. However, this breeze will make a big difference to the temperatures in the sunshine. Temperatures in southwestern will be getting into the mid twenties. Where it stays cloudy or where you've got the breeze coming in from the sea in the east, more likely mid to high teens."
Temperature Spike on July 16
According to the Met Office, temperatures will shoot back up to 26°C by late afternoon on Thursday, July 16, in Dumfries and Cumnock. Surrounding areas are also expected to enjoy sizzling temperatures, with Ayr, Fort William, and Aberlour predicted to hit highs of 25°C.
However, Scots in eastern coastal areas could still be tackling a breeze, as the Met Office is only predicting highs of 18°C in areas such as Dundee and Peterhead.
UV Level Warning
The Met Office urges Scots to protect their skin on Thursday, as the UV level is set to be at a high seven. The advice reads: "Seek shade during midday hours, cover up and wear sunscreen."
