A dramatic maritime rescue unfolded in the Firth of Clyde this week after a boat sank, leaving two people in perilous waters. RNLI lifeboat crews from Largs and Helensburgh launched a swift and coordinated emergency response to the incident off the Ayrshire coast.
The alarm was raised at approximately 12:20 PM, triggering an immediate launch of the Largs RNLI's Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat, R A Wilson. The UK Coastguard simultaneously tasked the larger Helensburgh all-weather lifeboat to assist in the search and rescue operation.
Upon arriving at the reported location, the crews faced a challenging situation. The casualty vessel had succumbed to the water and was fully submerged. The two individuals were found in the sea, having been thrown from their craft as it sank.
A Coordinated Lifeboat Response
The RNLI crews worked seamlessly to recover the casualties from the cold water. Once safely aboard one of the lifeboats, they were assessed for any injuries and the effects of cold water shock. Fortunately, despite their ordeal, neither required immediate hospital treatment.
With the survivors secure, the focus turned to the sunken vessel. The lifeboat crews successfully established a tow with the submerged boat and carefully recovered it from the depths. It was then safely transported back to the shore at Largs.
Safety Message from the RNLI
A spokesperson for Largs RNLI emphasised the importance of safety on the water, stating: "We would like to wish the two casualties well following what must have been a very frightening experience. This incident shows how things can change quickly at sea."
The spokesperson also issued a crucial reminder to all mariners: "Always remember to wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid and carry a means of calling for help. If you see someone in trouble on the water or along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
The successful outcome highlights the vital, life-saving work performed by the volunteer crews of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution around the clock.
