The UK is bracing for a scorching heatwave, with temperatures set to reach 37C in parts of the country. Weather maps from WXCharts pinpoint the peak at 6pm on June 24, while the Met Office forecasts 37C for London at 4pm on June 23 as well.
Temperature Surge Across the UK
Brits have already enjoyed a warmer climate, with 26C recorded on June 20. Now, an 11C temperature hike is expected over the next three days as a heatwave looms. Both the Met Office and WXCharts indicate that parts of the UK will experience 37C heats. London will see the highest temperatures, reaching 35C to 36C in surrounding areas.
Met Office Warning and Guidance
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Greg Wolverson said: "While heatwave criteria will be met for some in the south and southeast of England over the weekend, with temperatures into the low 30s Celsius possible, the warmth will expand and intensify at the start of next week, which, coupled with high temperatures overnight, leads to potential impacts. Temperatures will peak around the mid-30s Celsius on Monday and Tuesday. The humidity will also mean this feels close, warmer and more uncomfortable for many. Tropical nights – where the temperature doesn’t drop below 20°C are also likely for some."
The Met Office has issued an amber extreme heat warning and provided guidance to stay safe: "Keep yourself safe by following these simple steps to reduce the likelihood of the heat making you feel unwell; drink plenty of fluids, keep out of the sun and avoid any exercise between 11am-3pm when the sun is strongest and close curtains in rooms that face the sun. If you are going out take water with you, stay in the shade, wear sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat. Keep yourself safe whilst enjoying the water in this weather by following these simple steps: enter the water gradually, avoiding jumping or diving straight in, to reduce your risk of cold-water shock, go to a lifeguarded beach or a supervised swimming area, and, if you, or anyone else, get into difficulty in the water, float on your back."
Timeline of the Heatwave
Before the peak on June 24, Brits can expect an exceedingly warm period. The temperature in London is expected to hit 30C on June 21 and June 22. On June 23, the Met Office forecasts 37C for 4pm in London, and on June 24, London will again see 37C, with the rest of the country also bracing for a spike in temperature.
Regional Impact
While London and the southeast will experience the highest temperatures, other parts of the UK will also see significant heat. The Met Office warning covers 71 areas with potential power cuts, urging households to gather batteries and torches from 1am Monday. The heatwave is expected to bring high humidity, making conditions feel even warmer and more uncomfortable.
