Forecasters have shared the likelihood of Scotland experiencing an Indian summer this September before the autumn season truly begins to settle in.
September can be one of the most confusing months of the year weather wise. Despite the summer season starting to fizzle out and rainfall becoming more frequent, temperatures sitting in the high-teens can leave many of us unsure if it is time to bring out the warmer autumn clothes.
While some people may be ready for the longer nights and colourful leaves beginning to fall, others are holding out hope for the chance of an Indian summer. According to the Met Office, this is defined as "a warm, calm spell of weather occurring in autumn".
High pressure could bring drier and warmer conditions
There could be a chance of a rise in temperatures later in September as the weather becomes more settled, according to forecasters. Meteorologists at BBC Weather are predicting that by midway through the month (September 14), high pressure could lead to "longer drier and calmer periods". As a result, "above-average warmth is most likely overall" for the UK.
However, forecasters do warn: "With the nights getting longer, some cool mornings are possible under clear and calm conditions, and patches of mist and fog are possible as well."
This warmer spell is currently expected to continue as a further boost in temperature may occur between September 21 and 27. While this forecast is unable to give specific temperature highs as of yet, this looks positive towards Scots being able to hold on to the warmer weather for a little bit longer.
Met Office outlook for the rest of September
The Met Office has also predicted that warmer days could still be on the horizon. However, it does look like the lower parts of the country will receive most of the benefits. The national forecaster's long range UK forecast for September 12 to 21 reads: "Later in the month, high pressure may become more dominant in the vicinity of the UK, perhaps bringing more widely settled conditions for a time, especially away from the far north."
Temperatures for the period as a whole will probably be close to average overall, but there is scope for some rather warm days at times, along with occasional relatively cool nights.
Wet and windy weather expected first
However, before this drier and more settled weather can be enjoyed, further wet and windy spells are predicted to batter the country this week. The BBC forecast reads: "The rest of the coming week should have occasional Atlantic weather systems passing through, bringing further periods of rain, some perhaps thundery, with brighter and drier but potentially showery interludes."
The Met Office is also warning of occasional rain and showers into the weekend, with "strong winds" possible at times. While temperatures are looking to be around average for this time of year, if not slightly above, it may be best to have a light raincoat on hand in case any unexpected showers occur.
