Nintendo has announced two Nintendo Direct broadcasts for this week, and Zelda fans are already speculating that classic GameCube titles could join the Nintendo Switch Online catalogue.
The special showcase celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda is scheduled for 3pm BST on Tuesday, September 8. While nothing has been confirmed, fans expect a first look at gameplay for the Ocarina of Time remake on Nintendo Switch 2 and a teaser for next year's Legend of Zelda live-action film.
Fans call for GameCube classics
On Reddit, fans have been sharing their hopes for the Zelda Direct, with many calling for the return of older titles. One user wrote: “So, Twilight Princess for Nintendo Switch Online, anyone?” Several agreed, with some calling it a “blindspot” and the only Zelda game they haven't played.
Another replied: “I’ll raise you. Let’s aspire for Wind Waker HD AND Twilight Princess HD instead of dreaming of never owning games.”
A third posted: “So, it's for Zelda's overall 40th Anniversary which means not only are we getting OoT remake news, but our first look at the movie, Zelda games which are likely coming to NSO, and maybe a surprise like maybe Twilight Princess's remaster gets ported to the Switch.”
Ocarina of Time remake and movie updates
The Ocarina of Time remake was confirmed during June's Nintendo Direct, with only a short teaser trailer, a release window, and a drastically overhauled art style revealed at the time. The exact release date is expected to be confirmed during the Zelda Direct, with the game set to arrive by the end of 2026.
Fans are also waiting on confirmation of a collector's edition and a limited edition Switch 2 console to tie in with the anniversary. Recent leaks point to Xenoblade Chronicles developers Monolith Soft being involved in the remake's creation.
As for the Zelda movie, casting details have emerged over recent months. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth stars as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda, with Dichen Lachman, Uli Latukefu and the late Sam Neill also joining the cast. Directed by Wes Ball, the film finished shooting in April this year and is set for theatrical release on April 30, 2027. Shot on location in New Zealand, the film's plot has yet to be revealed, but more may be shared during the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
