Harvey Elliott has joined Valencia on a season-long loan from Liverpool, and his own words upon landing in Spain reveal just how far his career has fallen. The 23-year-old admitted he would "play anywhere" before completing the move, underscoring his desperation for regular football.
A season to forget at Villa Park
Elliott joined Liverpool from Fulham in 2019 as a highly rated prospect. He won the Premier League in 2020 and, after a loan at Blackburn Rovers, grew into first-team contention under Jurgen Klopp, starting 25 games in the 2022/23 campaign and 27 the following season. Under Arne Slot, he helped lift another league title in 2025 as a key bench player.
Last summer he sought more playing time and joined Aston Villa on an initial loan with a £35million obligation to buy. That move backfired: the purchase option would trigger if he made 10 appearances, but Unai Emery did not deem him worth it. Elliott appeared just five times all season, stagnating on the Villa bench before returning to Liverpool, where he fell out of favour with Andoni Iraola.
A fresh start at the Mestalla
Now he has the chance to revive a career that has stalled. "I'll play anywhere," Elliott said after arriving in Valencia. "I'm just happy to play football. But as a number 10, that is where I think I am the most effective."
Valencia themselves have declined in recent years. Financial strain, ownership issues and delays to their new stadium project have ended their status among La Liga's elite. Their last five league finishes read 9th, 16th, 9th, 12th and 9th, and they have one point from their opening three games this term.
Elliott is determined to prove his worth. "I'm going to play my best here. I know the club's history and I know it demands a lot of hard work. I'm going to give everything I have for Valencia," he said. "To be honest, it all happened pretty fast. I was just waiting for the call and made sure I was ready to come here and play, which is exactly what I'm doing. I'm here now and looking forward to the weekend."
His Liverpool contract runs until 2028, and the hope is that the historic Mestalla can restore his fortunes.
