The Met Office has issued its Bonfire Night weather forecast, warning that parts of the UK could face prolonged spells of rain as millions prepare to watch fireworks displays. Forecasters have revealed where showers are most likely to strike on Thursday, with conditions expected to vary considerably across the country.
Regional breakdown
The latest outlook suggests that northern areas could experience a mix of clear spells and showers, while central parts of the UK are expected to remain largely dry, despite cloudier skies. However, those heading outdoors in the far south face the possibility of longer spells of rain, potentially putting a dampener on Bonfire Night celebrations.
In an update shared on X, the Met Office outlined three key things people should know ahead of the annual event. It said: "Bonfire Night is tomorrow, here's three things you need to know: Clear spells and showers in the north. Cloudier but drier across central parts. A chance of longer spells of rain in the far south."
Temperatures and winds
Met Office weather maps for 7pm on Thursday show temperatures hovering around single figures and low double digits across much of the country. Brisk easterly winds are also expected across southern Britain, with isolated showers potentially becoming heavier towards the southwest later in the day.
Further north and northwest, brighter conditions are forecast, although patches of fog could linger in some areas. The Met Office has also indicated that conditions could feel particularly chilly in southern parts of the country, adding to the prospect of an unsettled evening for those attending outdoor celebrations.
Advice for attendees
Those heading to fireworks displays may want to wrap up warm, with coats, scarves and gloves likely to come in handy as temperatures fall after sunset. The combination of rain and brisk winds could make conditions less comfortable for spectators, particularly at events taking place in exposed locations.
However, the forecast suggests that some parts of the country could escape the worst of the unsettled weather, with dry conditions offering a better chance of enjoying outdoor celebrations.
In a separate weather forecast for Thursday, the Met Office wrote: "Brisk easterly winds across the south with isolated showers, heaviest near southwest England later. Northern and northwestern areas see the brightest conditions, though fog may linger. Rather chilly further south."
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Met Office expects largely cloudy conditions, with further showers possible alongside occasional frost and fog. Anyone planning to attend Bonfire Night celebrations is encouraged to check the latest local forecast before setting off.
