New York City was hit by flash floods on Saturday, just hours before the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, with torrential rain overwhelming drainage systems and causing widespread travel disruption. The National Weather Service reported that between two and four inches of rain fell within just a few hours, with downpours reaching rates of up to an inch per hour. The heaviest rainfall was concentrated over lower Manhattan, western Brooklyn, and parts of Queens.
Subway and Airport Disruptions
The intricate subway system was severely affected, with video footage showing water pouring down onto trains and platforms, forcing travelers to shield themselves from the rain. The flooding also caused significant travel disruption, including lane closures on the Long Island Expressway at 188th Street and the Clearview Expressway at Northern Boulevard. Major airports—LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy International, and Newark Liberty International—reported delays and flight cancellations due to the inclement weather.
Emergency Warnings and Cancellations
Emergency officials urged residents in basement apartments to leave their homes and seek higher ground as the floodwaters rose. The New York Yankees-Dodgers baseball game scheduled for Saturday at Yankee Stadium was cancelled due to the weather. Footage shared on social media showed cars being swept through streets by high water, as well as bins and restaurant umbrellas floating down roads, while pedestrians waded through flooded areas.
The flash floods struck just hours before the World Cup final, adding to the chaos in the city. The National Weather Service noted that the rapid rainfall overwhelmed the drainage system, leading to the sudden flooding. No injuries have been reported so far, but officials continue to monitor the situation as more rain is forecast.
