NATO jets destroy drone over Lithuania amid Russia tensions

NATO fighter jets were scrambled above Lithuania on Monday night to intercept a drone that had entered the country's airspace. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda confirmed the drone was destroyed by the Allied aircraft.

President confirms interception

In a post on X, President Nausėda wrote: "A drone that just entered Lithuanian airspace was destroyed by NATO fighter jets. I thank Allied personnel for their swift response." He added: "With Russia intensifying its aggression against Ukraine, such readiness is vital for our region. Together with our NATO Allies, Lithuania will defend its airspace."

Emergency alert issued

An emergency notification was sent to residents, warning them of an 'air threat' during the incident. The event comes amid heightened tensions in the region following Russia's ongoing actions in Ukraine.
