Dog owners have received urgent guidance as they need to keep an eye on their pets. If you're someone who loves dogs, you need to pay attention as, though they don't intend to, they sometimes bring home things that can hinder your property.
Fleas just love dogs, but they're not something you want in your house, and they can become a bit of a problem if your dog brings them home. However, according to Adam Juson, co-founder and director of commercial pest control specialists Merlin Environmental, there's some action people should take if they want to try and prevent the issue becoming a big problem.
Take action after walks
"Regular grooming after walks should become part of your routine," said Adam. "Especially if you walk through long grass or woodland."
Using a fine-toothed flea comb through your dog's coat can help intercept unwelcome passengers before they get the opportunity to establish themselves.
"And pay extra attention after visits to kennels or dog parks," added Adam. "Fleas regularly move from animal to animal."
Treatment is key
Vet-recommended flea treatments remain the most dependable way to keep your dog protected. Spot-on treatments, tablets and collars are all available, though it's always advisable to consult your vet about which option is best suited to your pet.
"While fleas can't survive freezing temperatures, they breed year-round indoors," explained Adam. "So, if you visit a friend's house and their pets have fleas, it's easy to bring them home with you. It's always better to use treatments throughout the year."
Dog fleas are, in fact, particularly prevalent in September. With warm late-summer weather combined with indoor heating, flea activity remains high throughout September and October, meaning you need to stay on your guard.
Always clean bedding
Your dog's bed is another area where fleas pose a significant risk. "Flea eggs and larvae can become trapped in bedding fibres," said Adam. "Washing beds regularly is really important if you want to prevent fleas."
A weekly hot wash is always a sensible precaution — just check the care label before putting it in the machine.
Vacuum where fleas hide
Regularly hoovering carpets, sofas and skirting boards can also help to physically remove flea eggs and larvae. "Just don't forget to empty the vacuum outside afterwards," warned Adam. "Fleas will happily breed in a vacuum bag or bucket for weeks."
Adam added: "Fleas are far easier to prevent than treat once they're established indoors. But, if you spot fleas on your pet or notice unexplained bites, tackling the dog alone may not be enough. Flea eggs can remain hidden in carpets and furnishings, so you need to tackle the entire infestation."
