Donald Trump used the word "hot" to describe Lionel Messi when the Argentina star visited the White House in March, a compliment that has resurfaced ahead of the World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina.
Trump's Unusual Compliment to Messi
Messi, now 39, was invited to the White House with his Inter Miami teammates after winning the 2025 MLS Cup. During the event, Trump praised the football legend, saying: "Leo is the reigning FIFA World Cup MVP. You could've gone anywhere in the world, you could've chosen any team in the world, you chose to go to Miami. I don't blame you, the weather is extremely good. I just want to thank you for bringing us all on this ride. Because you are hot and talented and a great person."
The comment raised eyebrows given Messi's status as one of the greatest footballers of all time, but Trump's choice of words was consistent with his informal style.
Messi's Historic World Cup Campaign
Messi has been in blistering form at the 2026 World Cup, scoring eight goals so far and becoming the tournament's all-time record goalscorer. He leads Argentina into a blockbuster semi-final against England in Atlanta, marking the first time he has faced the Three Lions for his country.
Inter Miami's White House Visit
Messi joined Inter Miami in July 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, signing a lucrative two-and-a-half-year deal that was extended in 2025. He helped the club win the 2023 Leagues Cup, their first official trophy. In 2024, Inter Miami earned the Supporters' Shield for the best regular-season record, and in 2025 they became MLS Cup champions.
To honor the victory, the entire squad was invited to the White House. Trump also singled out Rodrigo De Paul, who will also face England, with an unusual remark: "Do you have any bad-looking players? I like the bad-looking guys much better."
England-Argentina Semi-Final
The semi-final in Atlanta is one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament. England have their own controversies, including a row with FIFA over officiating. Meanwhile, the White House has reportedly let slip which nation they want to win, adding to the intrigue.
Messi's form and Trump's compliment have added extra spice to the clash, as the world watches to see if Argentina can reach another final.
