Manchester City academy prospect Tyrone Samba has signed a new contract with the club, extending his stay until 2030. The 18-year-old only signed his first professional contract last summer but has now agreed new terms with the Blues.
The new deal is a reward for his progression over the past 12 months and reflects how highly regarded he is at the club. Samba, whose brother Floyd is also a highly-rated prospect at City and scored a brace in the League Cup win over Norwich City last month, helped the Blues win the FA Youth Cup last season and has featured for the Under-21s this term.
UEFA Youth League setback
City suffered a 2-0 UEFA Youth League defeat to PSG on Wednesday, leaving them without a point after their opening two matches. The Blues were beaten in Porto in their opener and, despite an improved display against the French side at the Joie Stadium, failed to collect a result.
The defeat leaves City in a perilous position in a competition they are desperate to do well in, having under-achieved by their own high standards in recent seasons. City are 33rd in the 36-team table, with the top 22 progressing to the knockout stages. The Blues welcome AEK Athens to Manchester on Tuesday in need of three points to keep their hopes alive, with the league phase comprising only six fixtures as opposed to the eight in the senior set-up.
Positive signs despite results
Despite disappointment with the current league position, boss Oli Reiss has seen positive signs from his squad. "I think especially in an academy and a youth team you look on the performances," he said. "The performance in Porto was definitely not good and it was much better (against PSG). We lost the first two games but I told the lads after the game when we can build on what we did in the second half, especially what was happened after 30 minutes, I'm looking forward to playing the next games."
"Of course we are disappointed with the result, performance wise we are okay but for us it's a top opportunity to take some bits to develop," he added.
Academy digest
Midfielder Harrison Miles suffered an injury against PSG and had to be replaced early in the contest. The young midfielder could face a spell on the sidelines and was due to undergo scans this week to determine the seriousness of the issue.
City's EDS side are next in action on Tuesday against AEK in the Youth League before welcoming Stoke City to the Joie in Premier League 2 on Friday. City's Under-18s are without a game this weekend, returning to action on Saturday, October 24, with a league game away at Derby County.
Meanwhile, former City youngster George Glendon will hope to create FA Cup history on Saturday with Bury. The Shakers, now in the seventh tier, are one win from the first round proper and host National League promotion chasers Harrogate Town in a televised 12.30pm tie.
