A projectile struck the international airport in Riyadh on Sunday, October 12, hitting a passenger terminal used for domestic flights. The attack came just one day after a missile hit the same terminal, killing 12 people, according to the Saudi-led coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Four strikes in five days
The Houthis claimed responsibility for both attacks as well as others. The airport has been struck four times in the past five days and has been closed since Saturday's missile attack, which the coalition described as the deadliest in the nation since the Iran war started.
More than 300 people were injured in Saturday's attack, with some in critical condition. The latest strike hit terminals 3 and 4, which service domestic flights.
Escalation in the Middle East
The strikes mark the latest escalation in the Middle East war. The conflict continues to pose a threat to global oil markets, commercial shipping through a crucial alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, aviation throughout the Middle East as well as civilians.
The latest strike in Riyadh came shortly after the Houthis said the airport in the rebel-held Yemeni capital of Sanaa had been struck again. They blamed the Saudis. Saudi Arabia has not commented on the strikes.
