X Platform Exposes Children to Graphic Pornography, Study Reveals

A shocking investigation has uncovered that Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is actively pushing graphic pornographic content to children as young as 13 years old. The study, conducted by the UK-based Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), found that teenagers using the platform were routinely exposed to images and videos depicting sexual acts and exposed genitals, with the platform's own algorithm recommending explicit material.

Direct Messages and Weak Safeguards

Adults were also able to message children directly on the platform, despite supposed safeguards designed to prevent unsolicited contact. In one particularly disturbing case, a 13-year-old girl's account received a video showing a man masturbating on camera. The research highlighted how X's "weak safeguards" were directly driving this exposure, creating significant risks of exploitation and clear breaches of the UK's Online Safety Act.

Callum Hood, Head of Research at CCDH UK, stated: 'Even short-lived curiosity could expose children to explicit sexual material and risks of grooming, proving the platform's safeguards simply do not work.'

Algorithmic Recommendations and Community Access

Researchers created two test accounts for a boy and girl aged 13—the minimum age permitted on the platform. They then searched for sexual terms that teenagers might commonly use, such as 'sex,' 'porn,' and 'boobs.' Alarmingly, eight out of ten searches returned posts that met X's own definition of explicit content, including:

  • Sexual acts and simulated sex
  • Sexual fluids
  • Full nudity

The platform's algorithm then exposed the teen accounts to even more graphic material without them conducting further searches. On the 'For You' recommendation section, 30.5% of recommended posts were explicit, featuring images and videos of sex, masturbation, and content appearing to depict children in sexual situations.

Furthermore, the teenage accounts were able to join 15 out of 20 popular sexual adult communities on X, including groups named 'Virgin Trades' and 'Goon Group.' They were also exposed to posts using images of convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein to promote pornography websites.

Broader Context and Regulatory Scrutiny

The think tank emphasized that these findings represent a systemic failure, not an isolated incident. 'The result is clear: children are exposed to avoidable harm, and the company's claims of safety do not stand up to scrutiny,' the report concluded.

This revelation comes as Elon Musk, the world's richest man who purchased X in 2022, already faces significant criticism over the platform's AI-powered Grok feature. This tool allows users to edit pictures of real people, including children, to show them in revealing clothing such as bikinis. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has described photographs generated by Grok as 'disgusting' and 'shameful.'

Ofcom, the UK's online safety regulator, has launched a formal investigation into X's Grok AI chatbot. A spokeswoman commented on the latest findings: 'Protecting children is a priority for Ofcom. Under the Online Safety Act, tech firms are accountable for ensuring their platforms are safer for children.'

The regulator warned that companies failing to comply can expect enforcement action, noting it has already launched investigations into more than 100 platforms, including X, and issued over a dozen fines for non-compliance. The testing for this study was carried out by researchers in the UK between February and March of this year.
