Mum Issues Urgent Warning Over Rise in Disturbing Social Media Trend Affecting Kids
Mum Warns Parents of Disturbing Social Media Trend Targeting Kids

A mother has issued an urgent warning to parents after noticing a horrifying increase in a disturbing social media trend. This comes as the UK government considers a social media ban for children, with Technology Secretary Liz Kendall stating that 'drastic' action is necessary.

Mum's Urgent Plea

Courtney McCarty, who began her online presence during the 'mummy blogging era,' now hopes to alert other parents to the dangers. She revealed that individuals are taking images of children from school websites and social media accounts, then using them to create child abuse material and blackmail schools.

Speaking to her 46,400 Instagram followers, she said: 'My account started in the mummy blogging era. I became a mum online, I shared my babies, I shared their early years and I have deep regrets about that. But this video isn't about that; it's about something concerning that I'm seeing. UK schools are being blackmailed. People are taking images of children off their websites and social media accounts, creating child abuse material and blackmailing the schools. I'm not even joking.'

AI-Generated Content

McCarty explained that this is not a new issue, having heard of similar cases in recent years. She mentioned Australian mothers who shared experiences where their daughters' images were reproduced by other children using AI to create pornographic content. She warned that such situations have led to children taking their own lives due to shame and trauma.

Call to Action

The mother urged parents to have conversations with their children about the risks. 'I think we need to have conversations with our kids about this, how they could fall victim and how they could be involved. Being influenced by their peer group to think something like this would be funny could change the outcome of their whole entire life,' she said.

She added: 'Think about how you would feel as a parent if your child became a victim or a perpetrator simply because of influence from other kids who thought this was funny at the time. We need to do better, we need to educate more, we need to delay the way social media is used, not just in schools but the images our kids share. Keep our kids off social media.'

Parental Response

Since sharing her post, other parents have thanked her for the information. One commented: 'Omg that's horrifying.' Another asked: 'I'd love tips on where to start. How do I remove my kids from my social media? Do I just delete all photos and posts?'
