Whiten stained bed sheets in 30 minutes with 1 natural item

Stained or dull bed sheets can be whitened in just 30 minutes using soda crystals, a natural cleaning item that hotels reportedly rely on for their crisp white bedding. The technique was shared by King of Cotton, a producer of quality cotton products, which explained how hotels “get sheets so white” without industrial machinery.

How to whiten bed sheets with soda crystals

According to the cotton experts, a 30-minute soak in warm water with two tablespoons of soda crystals can lift deep-seated dullness that standard wash cycles miss. Soda crystals are an all-natural cleaning product that not only whitens but also helps soften bed sheets.

This step is “particularly effective” for removing yellowing caused by the oxidation of skin oils and evening face creams. A clean soak ensures the wash starts with the best possible foundation.

Washing and drying tips for hotel-white sheets

When washing white bed sheets, only white items should be placed in the same load. Even a single light grey sock or a cream-coloured pillowcase can transfer trace amounts of dye, dulling the brightness of 100% cotton sheets.

A temperature of 60°C is considered the “sweet spot” because it is hot enough to kill 99.9% of bacteria and dissolve body oils without damaging the cotton. The pros advise to “avoid 90°C washes at home”, as extreme temperatures can “set” protein-based stains like sweat or blood, making them permanent.

Drying and ironing for a luxury finish

Sun-drying is a powerful natural whitening method, as the sun's ultraviolet rays act as a mild bleaching agent. Hanging linens outside for two to three hours of direct sunlight can significantly brighten fabric and kill remaining surface bacteria, offering an eco-friendly alternative to chemical treatments.

However, sheets should be brought in once dry, as overexposure to UV rays can weaken cotton fibres. Ironing while sheets are approximately 10% damp allows heat to compress the fibres, creating a flat surface that reflects light effectively. Hotels use heavy, heated rollers called mangles for a glass-like finish, which can be replicated with a high-pressure steam iron of at least 6 bars of pressure.

How often to wash white bed sheets

It is recommended to wash white bedding every seven days to prevent the build-up of oils and skin cells. Waiting longer than a week allows organic matter to penetrate deeper into the cotton weave, making it harder to remove. In high-end hospitality environments, linens are changed after every guest or every three days for long stays, preventing the greyish hue caused by dirt becoming set into fabric by body heat.
