A survey by haircare brand method has found that 55% of people in the UK have followed the same hair wash routine since their teens, while more than a third admit they wash their hair on autopilot. The research also revealed that 71% of respondents said freshly-washed hair has a positive effect on their mood.
Hairography launch
To encourage a more mindful approach to hair washing, method has teamed up with TV presenter and drag artist Danny Beard to launch method presents: Hairography, a dance routine designed to give hair wash day a boost.
Danny said: “I've built a career on confidence, self-expression and the power of a great hair flip. Hair isn’t just hair, it’s part of our identity, our energy and the way we tell the world who we are.
“When your hair looks and feels good, you feel that shift in confidence. Working with method to create this Hairography routine was about taking something we often rush through and turning it into a moment of self-expression and joy.
“Whether it’s a little movement, self-care, or simply taking time to reconnect with yourself, it’s the small rituals that truly have the power to transform your mood.”
Expert advice on washing technique
The survey also found that around 31% skip the recommended second shampoo altogether, despite the benefits of a more thorough cleanse being widely recommended by hair experts.
Celebrity hair stylist and trichologist Mark Blake said: “Most people seriously underestimate how much movement benefits the hair and scalp. method's research shows that people want more from their hair wash routine but simply aren't committing the time and energy it deserves.
“Taking a few extra minutes to really work your shampoo into the scalp, properly rinse and give your head a good massage can make a real difference – not just to the health of your hair and scalp, but to how you feel afterwards. That’s exactly why the Hairography routine is designed to bring more movement, intention and feel-good energy to wash day.”
Mark added that washing your hair every day can be beneficial for scalp health, while taking at least four minutes to properly lather and rinse can help remove product build-up and prevent a dry or irritated scalp. A scalp massage can support healthy hair follicles by increasing blood flow, while switching up shampoo and conditioner can help give the hair and scalp the ingredients and stimulation they need.
Brand's response
A method spokesperson said: “Washing your hair is something people already spend time on – so why not choose to make that time transformative? We were saddened, though not surprised, that over a third of us rush through on autopilot, which is why method presents: Hairography is about bringing awareness to how small but powerful the hair wash moment can be when your energy lifts, confidence builds and attitude awakens.
“It's not just a dance – it's permission to feel good, express yourself and make the shift to be your most authentic self. Our aim is to turn that everyday ritual into a moment of joy and self-expression. And whilst it isn’t imperative to use method haircare, the scent-sational fragrances definitely help.”
method presents: Hairography is available to watch online and through a one-week takeover at FRAME from September 16 to 23, launching with an exclusive session with Danny Beard on September 15.
