I put two washing machine cleaners to the test to tackle a stubborn odour and was left pleasantly surprised by the results. By Angela Patrone, Senior Lifestyle Reporter
It's tempting to assume that appliances designed to clean our belongings, such as washing machines, are inherently spotless themselves. The reality, however, is that washing machines are a hotbed for bacteria, mould, and unpleasant smells. I generally prefer the natural approach of using soda crystals to freshen up my washing machine. On this occasion, though, I needed something rather more heavy-duty, as the soda crystals simply couldn't shift the persistent odour emanating from the drum.
The products put to the test were the Dettol Washing Machine Cleaner and the Dr. Beckmann Service-it Washing Machine Cleaner.
Price Comparison
Both washing machine cleaners came in at a comparable price point. The Dettol product retails at £2.99, while the Dr. Beckmann solution is priced at £2.19.
Testing the Dettol Washing Machine Cleaner
To apply it, I began by diluting one tablespoon of the washing machine cleaner in 200ml of hot water to wipe down the detergent drawer, glass door and seal. This cleaning solution proved reasonably effective at shifting hardened soap residue and minor patches of surface mould. I then replaced the drawer in the machine and poured the remaining solution into it before running the appliance on a 60-degree wash cycle. Once the cycle had finished, the drum appeared noticeably shinier, yet the unpleasant smell still greeted me the moment I opened the door.
Testing the Dr. Beckmann Washing Machine Cleaner
Next came the moment to put the Dr. Beckmann washing machine cleaner through its paces. As the drawer, seal and door required no further attention, the entire bottle was emptied into the detergent drawer. While the instructions recommended running a minimum 40-degree cycle, a 60-degree setting was chosen to ensure a fair comparison. Once the cycle had finished, opening the door revealed nothing but a pleasant floral fragrance, with no trace of any musty odour.
Additional Benefits
Beyond cleaning the machine itself, when used on a regular basis, this cleaning solution is designed to promote energy-efficient washing and extend the appliance's working life.
Verdict
While the Dettol washing machine cleaner did prove sufficiently effective at tackling the drawer, it fell short when it came to the drum. Given that it performed better and costs less, the Dr. Beckmann Service-it Washing Machine Cleaner comes highly recommended.
