The Black & Decker Pet Hair Remover is the best overall tool for removing cat hair from linens and furniture, based on testing of 18 popular products. The tool uses static electricity to pick up pet hair and collects it in a chamber for easy cleanup.
How the tools were tested
Eighteen of the most highly rated and commonly used cat hair removal tools were selected for testing. Each tool was tried on a variety of fabrics, including velvet, cotton, polyester, carpet and linen, to determine performance on different textures. The tools were used over large surface areas, and the time taken to remove cat hair was considered, along with the effort exerted against the amount of hair removed.
The testing was conducted by a reviewer who shares an 850 sq ft home with three kittens adopted in August 2024. The cats are domestic shorthairs and a domestic medium hair, and they shed an average amount. The reviewer also consulted a cleaning expert and a cat expert.
Best tools for different surfaces
The Salhap Pet Hair Removal Glove is the best for blankets and velvet. It uses static electricity to gather fur and is particularly helpful for large surface areas like velvet sofas and blankets. However, it leaves stray hairs on cotton shirts and woven fabrics.
The PetLovers EzRoll Reusable Lint Roller is the best eco-friendly option for clothing. It is very sticky and quickly removes loose fur from clothing, sheets and sofas. After use, it must be washed with detergent and water to revive its stickiness. Cleaning expert Brandon Pleshek advised removing as much hair as possible by hand and placing it in the trash before washing the roller.
The Analon Pet Hair Remover is a triangular comb that works well on the coarser fabrics found on cat trees and scratching posts. It has three sides with fine, medium and large teeth. It is small, so it takes a while to clean an entire cat tree or bed, and it did not work as well on smoother surfaces like velvet or cotton.
The LintZapper Portable Disposable Sheets are the best for travel. They come in a 4in x 3in packet that opens like a trifold wallet. The sheets are thin and compact, fitting in a small purse for emergencies. They are not the most eco-friendly option and are meant for one-time use.
The Uproot Cleaner Xtra Hair Removal Tool is the best for carpeted areas. The manufacturer's instructions say to angle the rake at 45 degrees for tougher fabrics like low pile carpets, and at 90 degrees for more delicate fabrics like plush rugs. The tool is large and collected a large amount of hair from carpeted stairs, but it was awkward to hold and angle perfectly.
The FurZapper Hair Removal Tool is the best for laundry. It is a flexible, tacky silicone disk that loosens hair from fabric during the wash and dry cycle. Scott Grillo, national sales manager of the company, explained that in the washer, loosened fur is carried away with the wash water, and in the dryer, it moves into the airflow and winds up in the dryer's lint trap. The tool removed all fur from a pajama set made of a modal and spandex blend.
The Lilly Brush Pet Hair Clean-Up Brush and Cap and Blade is the best for hair stuck in furniture. The blade glides across smooth surfaces like velvet and removes embedded fur from bouclé, linen and velvet. The brush picks up finer hairs. Pleshek said he likes the Lilly brush and relies on the brand's mini blade, starting with the blade and shifting to the brush as needed.
Expert advice on reducing cat hair
Pleshek said that for the best results, pet owners should stick to a routine. He recommended vacuuming high-traffic areas several times a week, washing pet bedding regularly, and keeping microfiber towels near entryways to wipe off paws. He also recommended an enzyme cleaner for liquid messes, naming War on Pee as his favorite.
Regular brushing can capture loose hair before it ends up throughout the home. Dr Mikel Delgado, a cat expert at Rover, said most cat caregivers will need to experiment with a few types of combs or brushes to find what their cat likes best. Delgado also advised against shaving cats, recommending that people seek the guidance of a low-stress, fear-free, cat-friendly groomer if needed.
Certain fabrics are more likely to trap hair. The reviewer noted that velvet is much easier to remove cat hair from than bouclé, which traps cat hairs and can fray when a cat repeatedly scratches it.
Tools that did not make the cut
Several tools were tested but not recommended. The Cooper Pet Hair Remover has a short handle and removed carpet fibers. The Chom Chom Pet Hair Remover is much more expensive than the Black & Decker roller and the experience of using it was indistinguishable. The OXO Good Grips Reusable Lint Roller takes too long because of its small surface area. The Uproot Mini Hair Removal Tool can damage fabrics such as cotton, bouclé and chenille. The Gonzo Pet Hair Lifter Sponge was uncomfortable to use and smelled bad. The FurDozer Pet Hair Remover & Auto Detailing Tools was uncomfortable to use, and the Furdozer X3Pro was less easy to use than the Analon brush in certain instances.
