A simple DIY hack using a cheap sponge can make painting garden fences much quicker and easier, according to a viral TikTok video. The method requires no brushes or paint sprayers, only a large yellow sponge that costs as little as 46p.
The Sponge Method
TikTok user @mrsclarehoops, who shares DIY advice, demonstrated the technique. She suggests cutting a large yellow sponge in half, wearing rubber gloves, and dipping it into paint before applying it to the fence. The sponge glides over the surface and gets into all the bumpy bits, making it faster than traditional methods.
Clare said: "It just glides on and gets into all the really bumpy bits. So it's not the neatest, but it's definitely the quickest, and sometimes speed is what you need." She added that it's the fastest method she's tried over the years, though not the neatest.
Viewer Reactions
Commenters supported the hack. User @dryad.girl thanked Clare, saying she has to paint her fence this year and finds using a big brush uncomfortable. @dan.smith called it "absolutely genius" and recommended cleaning the fence of algae first.
Preparing the Fence
Before painting, proper preparation is crucial. According to Wickes, choose a dry day, remove furniture and plants, clean the surface, and let it dry. Fix any cracks or damaged panels, sand the timber, and apply wood preserver if needed. Protect nearby patios and fixtures with dust sheets, and use masking tape on areas you don't want painted.
