FIFA Grants Rare Exemption for Mercedes Logo at England vs Argentina Semi
FIFA Grants Rare Exemption for Mercedes Logo at Semi

FIFA has largely adhered to its own strict rules throughout the World Cup, but the governing body found itself with little choice but to make an exception for the semi-final between England and Argentina on Wednesday. The match will be played at what is officially known as Atlanta Stadium, but the venue's permanent name—Mercedes-Benz Stadium—remains visible due to an unavoidable structural issue.

Sponsor Logo Restrictions at World Cup Venues

Throughout the tournament, FIFA has enforced a strict policy requiring host stadiums to cover up all non-FIFA sponsors' logos, lettering, and badges. This has led to creative measures, such as covering the Levi's logo at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. However, the massive Mercedes logo atop the Mercedes-Benz Stadium roof proved impossible to conceal without risking significant structural damage.

Car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz holds the naming rights to the home of Atlanta United during the MLS season, but FIFA's rules demand that any host stadium comply with a list of requirements, including the removal of all commercial identification not approved by FIFA. Despite these rules, an exemption was granted for the Mercedes logo.

Structural Challenges and Exemption

Earlier this year, The Athletic reported that the venue could not find a practical solution to cover the giant star on its retractable roof. The roof consists of eight petals, each weighing 500 tons and measuring 220 feet in length. Adam Fullerton, Mercedes-Benz Stadium's vice president of operations, said he had been "up all night" trying to work out a solution for hiding the Mercedes logos in early 2025. "It's not just on the roof," he said. "It's on all the facades of the stadium, too. And they're not small. They're large. By design."

FIFA's extensive document detailing stadium requirements states: "The requirement that there shall be no advertising, marketing, promotion, merchandising, licensing, signage or other commercial identification of any kind on any stands, scoreboards, seats, seatbacks, time clocks, staff uniforms, accreditation passes, fences or elsewhere inside, surrounding, or in the airspace above and around the Stadium other than that which is installed by, or at the direction of, FIFA or which is approved in writing by FIFA." The Mercedes branding directly conflicts with FIFA's mobility partners, Hyundai and Kia, but the exemption was granted for unavoidable reasons.

Impact on the Semi-Final

The stadium's retractable roof will remain closed throughout the competition, with air-conditioning maintaining the interior temperature amid scorching heat outside. This decision ensures the Mercedes logo remains visible, a rare breach of FIFA's otherwise strict commercial policies. The semi-final between England and Argentina is set to take place on Wednesday, drawing global attention to the unusual exemption.
