WhatsApp Username Feature: Millions Urged to Check Phones for Major Privacy Update
WhatsApp Username Feature: Major Privacy Update

WhatsApp is rolling out a significant privacy update that allows users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. The feature introduces optional usernames, similar to handles on Instagram, X, or Telegram, marking one of the biggest privacy changes to the messaging platform in years.

What the Update Means for Users

With over three billion monthly users globally, WhatsApp has long required sharing a mobile number to initiate contact. The new username feature aims to close this privacy gap. Users can start reserving usernames by navigating to Settings, Account, then Username in the latest version of the app. The rollout is gradual over the coming months, and users will be notified when the feature becomes available in their country.

According to AP, the feature is designed to enhance privacy on the platform. Ed Stapleton, tech expert at Clicks Geek, emphasized the importance of early action: "If you have a common name, a business name, a creator name or a username you already use on Instagram or Facebook, it is worth checking availability sooner rather than later."

Why Early Reservation Matters

Usernames can be between three and 35 characters, with WhatsApp reserving some for top celebrities, VIPs, and organisations, as reported by TechCrunch. Stapleton warned: "The shorter and simpler usernames are usually the first to go on any platform. You do not want to come back months later and find your preferred name has already been claimed."

The feature is optional, but users seeking a clean, memorable handle may want to reserve it early. Stapleton advised against including personal information: "The best usernames are memorable but not revealing. Using your full name and year of birth might be easy, but it also gives away information you may not need to share with strangers."

How to Choose and Reserve Your Username

To reserve a username, ensure you have the latest version of WhatsApp, then go to Settings, Account, and Username. If the option is available, you can create and reserve a username in seconds. If not, the feature may not yet be active in your region due to the gradual rollout.

Users should avoid picking names that include birth years, full dates of birth, addresses, workplace details, or anything that could make them easier to identify online. Stapleton added: "Using your full name and year of birth might be easy, but it also gives away information you may not need to share with strangers."

The update is expected to significantly enhance user privacy, especially when dealing with new contacts, holiday rental hosts, marketplace buyers, local groups, or business contacts. As the rollout progresses, millions of users are encouraged to check their phones and secure their preferred usernames before they are taken.
