PS6 Release Date Delayed: Next-Gen PlayStation Now Expected in 2029

Fans waiting for the next-generation PlayStation may have to wait significantly longer than anticipated. A new report from publisher Embracer suggests that Sony is considering delaying the PlayStation 6 launch from 2027 to 2028 or even 2029, citing rising component costs and memory shortages driven by artificial intelligence demand.

Embracer Report Highlights Delays

"Some analysts believe that Sony is now considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console from 2027 to 2028 or even 2029," reads an annual Embracer report. The report points to two key factors: the volatility of tariffs in the US and the global increase in RAM prices driven by AI. "Both factors could potentially have a negative impact on console retail prices, which would, in turn, hamper market growth. In the longer term, higher RAM costs could also cause operational delays to the launch of future consoles," the report adds.

Current Price Hikes

The current console generation has been unusual, with prices increasing rather than decreasing over time. The PS5 Disc Edition rose from £479.99 to £569.99, the PS5 Digital Edition from £429.99 to £519.99, and the premium PS5 Pro from £699.99 to £789.99. Nintendo Switch 2 prices are also set to rise by $50 in the US and €30 in Europe in September, while Steam Deck prices have increased and the upcoming Steam Machine is expected to launch with a hefty price tag.

AI Demand Driving Costs

The demand for memory by AI firms and datacentres is a major factor, increasing manufacturing costs and making it difficult to keep up with demand. Sony may be reluctant to pass these costs to consumers, leading to a potential delay.
