Wirral 10K road closures and new route for 2026 race
Wirral 10K road closures and new route for 2026 race

Road closures are in place today as the Wirral 10K returns for its 13th staging, with more than 1,000 runners expected to take part. The race starts at 9.30am on Sunday, October 11, beginning and finishing on King’s Parade in New Brighton, next to The Dips, where the Event Village will be based.

New route for 2026

The race will follow a new route this year, starting on King’s Parade before passing the boating lake and heading along Ian Fraser Walk towards Fort Perch Rock. Runners will then continue along the promenade to the halfway point at Seacombe Ferry before turning back towards New Brighton.

The mostly flat course is expected to appeal to runners chasing a personal best, as well as those taking part in their first 10K or stepping up their running distance. Organisers say the event’s location and relatively flat route are among the reasons for its growing popularity.

Entries surpass last year

Alan Rothwell, founder of BTR Liverpool, said entries have increased again this year and have already surpassed last year’s final total. He said the event is on course to sell out and described it as the perfect opportunity for runners to test themselves and target a personal best.

The Wirral 10K is BTR Liverpool’s final competitive race of 2026, before preparations turn towards the iconic Liverpool Santa Dash in December. Organisers are expecting runners, volunteers and spectators to gather at The Dips in New Brighton for the event.

Road closures and travel advice

A number of road closures and parking restrictions will be in place to allow the race to run safely, including closures on King’s Parade, Coastal Drive, Marine Promenade and Tower Promenade. Coastal Drive will also have no waiting or parking restrictions from 6pm on Saturday, October 10 until 3pm on Sunday, October 11.

Drivers are advised to follow the signed diversion via Victoria Road, Warren Drive, Grove Road and Harrison Drive, and to allow extra time for their journeys. Runners travelling by train should also plan ahead, as planned Merseyrail Northern Line works will affect services on the morning of the race.

Northern Line trains from the north will terminate at Sandhills, while services from the south will terminate at Hunts Cross, with replacement buses running into Liverpool city centre. The works also mean all Wirral Line services will operate from James Street, while BTR Liverpool’s 2026 calendar will conclude with the Liverpool Santa Dash on Sunday, December 6.
