Man City face 60-point deduction claim after appeal
Man City told 'stronger punishment' needed as 60-point deduction touted

TalkSPORT presenter Alan Brazil has claimed he has been informed that Manchester City could be facing a 60-point deduction following their guilty verdict for breaching the Premier League's financial regulations. The independent commission ruled City guilty on all but one of the charges levelled by the Premier League.

While the club have lodged an appeal against the initial guilty finding, the decision has sparked widespread speculation about the potential sanctions City might face. There have been continuing debates about fines, relegation, points deductions and expulsion since the charges initially emerged.

Brazil's claims of a 60-point deduction

Brazil now says he has been informed by two separate sources that City could be facing a 60-point deduction, which would all but ensure they're relegated.

Speaking on his talkSPORT breakfast programme, Brazil said: "This might be nonsense but two different sources have told me this, we're talking about Man City here and people are saying 'what's going to happen?'"

"I tell you what I've heard and people can shoot me down in flames, it might be nonsense right so I'm not saying I got it first, none of that rubbish.

"I'm hearing 60 point deduction. Six-zero point deduction which will please people and still give City a chance of survival. I don't know if it's this season, I can't see how it can be this season, because by the time they get it though it'll be too late."

"They're talking about a 60 point deduction, does that make any sense to you?"

McCoist calls for stronger punishment

The points penalty suggested by former Manchester United striker Brazil would represent the largest in Premier League history, yet still would not automatically ensure City suffer relegation.

Fellow pundit Ally McCoist believed the reported 60-point sanction wouldn't be severe enough and suggested clubs will demand harsher penalties.

McCoist said: "I think a lot of people wouldn't think that's enough. Obviously we'll have to wait and see how this appeal goes.

"If they didn't win the appeal, I think people would be looking for a stronger punishment than that."

Club statement on appeal

Manchester City issued a statement last week confirming they had appealed the guilty verdict, and now the footballing world awaits the outcome.

The club statement read: "Manchester City Football Club can confirm that at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026 the Club lodged its comprehensive Appeal against the opinion of the Premier League Commission, in relation to the Premier League disciplinary matter.

"The Club's firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe.

"The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case.

"We will continue to respect due process and are necessarily restricted in what we can say further until all proceedings are complete."
