Why is the US Anthem Being Played?
Heimo Schirgi, chief operating officer of the 2026 World Cup, explained: "Echoing the spirit of the opening ceremonies, which welcomed the world to the greatest stage in Canada, Mexico and the United States, the closing ceremony will bring the FIFA World Cup 2026 full circle through music, culture and football, before we kick off the highly anticipated match that will crown the champions of this groundbreaking tournament."
Typically, host nations do not have their anthem played during the final. For example, Qatar did not play its anthem in 2022. This decision marks a departure from World Cup tradition.
Who Will Perform and When?
Acclaimed singer Jennifer Hudson, an EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), will perform "The Star Spangled Banner" approximately 10 minutes before kick-off, which is 7:50 PM UK time (2:50 PM local). The Spanish and Argentine national anthems will follow after Hudson's performance.
Additional Ceremonies
The half-time show will feature performances by artists including Justin Bieber, Shakira, BTS, and Madonna. This extended show may lengthen the half-time break to 25 minutes, 10 minutes longer than usual.
