Games Inbox: The Last Of Us Part 3 already in development?

The Wednesday letters page considers whether Naughty Dog has already started work on The Last Of Us Part 3, while another reader challenges Rockstar's reasons for not launching GTA 6 on PC at the same time as consoles.

Naughty Dog's vague hints

One reader, writing under the name Apollo, expressed surprise at how openly Naughty Dog has been discussing its current projects, even without showing new footage. Managing three games at once is a heavy workload for any developer, but the reader suspects work on the two The Last Of Us titles has barely begun, with one likely being a smaller project similar in scale to Spider-Man: Miles Morales or Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

Apollo noted that the studio's comments were too vague to rule out The Last Of Us Part 3, especially since Naughty Dog has previously mentioned having an idea for a third mainline game. The reader believes Sony's response would have been an enthusiastic approval, and would be surprised if the sequel was not already in development, even if only in the form of scriptwriting and concept art.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is not considered a guaranteed hit, so Naughty Dog likely needs a backup plan. The reader doubts Sony was pleased with the six-year gap without a new release and would not welcome a flop.

GTA 6 PC delay questioned

Another reader, Paulie, found it amusing that many indie games are launching on the same day as GTA 6, but still cannot understand why the game is not coming to PC on day one. Given that it is reportedly the most expensive game ever made, the reader questioned why Rockstar could not afford a PC port team, especially when other companies manage simultaneous releases.

Paulie speculated that the reason may be Rockstar's concern over mods and datamining, which the company dislikes. A later PC release could protect the console experience from being spoiled. The reader dismissed the argument that more people buy on consoles, pointing out that an Xbox version is launching day one, and more players are likely to use PC than that platform.

Award cycle and re-releases

Chio commented on The Witcher 3 being the highest rated game of both 2015 and 2026, but argued such re-releases should not count for yearly awards. The reader prefers GameCentral's policy of excluding anything that is not a brand new game from the top 20, noting that remakes can be taken too far. They do not want to see Zelda: Ocarina Of Time top the charts again, as it already did on release and for the 3DS remaster.

Andrew J. highlighted a free giveaway on the Epic Games Store: System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster by Nightdive Studios, available from 4pm. Having backed the System Shock 1 remake Kickstarter, he received free copies of both games. He recommended System Shock 2, recalling his first playthrough in 2002 and noting that it is an immersive sim rather than a straightforward shooter.

Dave criticised Sony's PlayStation cashback scheme, calling it a business transaction designed to keep customers buying games from them. He suggested it should be called a creditback scheme and noted that Sony is a multi-billion dollar business, not a charity. He believes the move away from discs is about controlling prices and preventing players from buying pre-owned or discounted games elsewhere.

Switch of format wondered why Rockstar has never ported GTA 5 to the Switch, given that Red Dead Redemption was ported and modders have shown it is technically possible. The reader assumed the issue is GTA Online, which would be difficult to get working on Switch. They also expressed disappointment about the GTA 3 remasters and hoped for a proper GTA 4 remaster in the future.

Dante noted that The Witcher is out today (Tuesday) and that owners of the original can take advantage of a free upgrade. He admitted that a previous attempt to replay the game was abandoned due to annoying issues, but he might give it another try because of the free update and quality of life changes.

Serious issue raised concerns about God Of War Laufey, with the reader loving the first two games but finding this one strange. They felt the game takes itself too seriously despite its bizarre creatures and concepts, and wondered if the developer wanted to do something wilder but was only allowed to by making it a God Of War title. The reader also criticised Sony's tendency for similar tones across its games, mentioning Horizon Zero Dawn and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Inbox also-rans included a note about free DLC for 007 First Light coming on Thursday, related to cars, and a comment on the massive size of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave.
