Gerwyn Price is not competing at this year's World Cup of Darts, sparking widespread speculation. The tournament kicked off today in Frankfurt, with afternoon sessions beginning at 1pm. Rumours quickly emerged suggesting health concerns were behind his sudden withdrawal, based on his recent comments after a Premier League fixture in Leeds where he admitted his health was not in a great place.
The Real Reason for Price's Absence
The Welsh ace took to Instagram to set the record straight, assuring fans that his decision had nothing to do with health. Instead, Price revealed that the relentless professional darts circuit had worn him down and he needed a well-earned rest. He stressed that stepping back was necessary to dedicate more time to his family. 'There needs to be a slot where I can take a little bit of time off and give some time back to the family because the schedule's hectic at the minute,' he said. 'It's just about taking a break and spending some time with the family.'
Replacement and Impact
With Price unavailable, the Welsh camp scrambled for a stand-in. World No. 60 Nick Kenny was called up to partner Jonny Clayton, facing considerable pressure as a tournament newcomer. This is not the first time Price has skipped the pairs event; he also missed the 2024 edition, with Jim Williams successfully filling in alongside Clayton.
Price's withdrawal is a significant blow to Wales's hopes of winning the trophy and sharing the £500,000 prize fund. Price and Clayton have been a formidable partnership, winning together in 2020 and 2023 and reaching the final in 2025.
Looking Ahead
Despite stepping away from the World Cup, Price remains competitive in the current Premier League season, fighting for a play-off berth. His temporary absence from the pairs competition is far from the end of his darts year.
