Rangers: Makhanya Fumes Over Rejected Bid, Souttar Interest

Philadelphia Union have rejected a bid for reported Rangers target Olwethu Makhanya, leaving the South African defender 'devastated', according to South African outlet I Diski Times. The MLS side turned down an offer worth upwards of €3.5 million (£3 million) from an unnamed Belgian club.

Makhanya's World Cup Debut and Career Path

The 22-year-old centre-back made his debut for South Africa at the World Cup and is also attracting interest from several top clubs in France and Belgium. Makhanya began his career in his homeland with Stellenbosch before joining Philadelphia Union three years ago.

Rangers' Summer Transfer Activity

Rangers have already signed six new faces this summer under manager Derek McInnes, who is building towards the start of their Europa League qualifying campaign later this month. The Ibrox giants have bolstered their defensive ranks with the signing of England international Ben Godfrey on a season-long loan deal from Atalanta. However, Makhanya is now reportedly on Rangers' radar as a potential addition.

John Souttar's Future at Ibrox

A move for Makhanya could depend on Rangers' ability to offload John Souttar. The Scotland international is into the final year of his contract at Ibrox and was left out of the squad that travelled to Spain for a pre-season trip. Souttar has already been linked with Leicester City, who are looking to bounce back from consecutive relegations to EFL League One under former Rangers manager Russell Martin. The 29-year-old would join his younger brother Harry, 27, who has just represented Australia at the World Cup for a second time, at the King Power Stadium.

Sheffield United Join the Race

According to The Scottish Sun, Sheffield United are also keen on signing Souttar following a disappointing campaign which saw them finish mid-table in the English Championship. The Blades are now a rival for Leicester in the pursuit of the defender.
