Former Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole is in talks to become the next manager of Gateshead FC, following Rob Elliot's departure to Carlisle United. Elliot, who led the Tynesiders to a remarkable escape from relegation last season, left the club citing disagreements over the playing budget and lack of access to immediate infrastructure.
Cattermole's managerial ambitions
Cattermole, a fan favourite at Sunderland, has been waiting for the right opportunity to step into management. He previously held talks with Gateshead last summer and impressed the hierarchy during the interview process, but missed out on the role at that time. The 35-year-old was also in discussions with National League rivals Hartlepool United last month, but they opted to appoint former Newcastle star Lee Clark instead.
Since retiring from professional football, Cattermole has gained coaching experience at Middlesbrough's youth academy and later joined Bristol Rovers as part of their coaching staff. He has also become a familiar face on television as a pundit while continuing to develop his coaching credentials.
Previous experience and philosophy
Speaking to Chronicle Live in 2023, Cattermole expressed his desire to work in the professional game. "As soon as I finished playing, I made the decision to stop and then went straight on my coaching course and never really looked back," he said. "I'm quite relaxed whether I go in as a coach or a head coach. Whatever the title is, I just want to be working in the professional side of the game with the players."
Should Cattermole be appointed, he will inherit a squad with a solid foundation. Young talent Fenton John has agreed new terms with the club, while goalkeeper Adam Desbois, instrumental in last season's survival, has had his contract extended by another year. However, fan favourite Louis Storey, who played a key role behind the scenes, has opted to leave and reunite with Elliot at Carlisle United as assistant manager.
