Team Scotland basketball player Claire Paxton is calling on fans to bring the same energy to the Commonwealth Games as the Tartan Army did during the Women's World Cup. The 31-year-old Edinburgh native believes a passionate home crowd could make Glasgow 2026 extra special.
Hoping for a Tartan Army Atmosphere
Paxton, who has been selected for the 3x3 basketball competition at Glasgow 2026, expressed her desire to see Scotland fans replicate the fervor displayed at the World Cup in Boston. "I was watching the Scottish fans in Boston for the World Cup, and I was like, if we can get something like that going, that would be perfect," she said.
Reflecting on the previous Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Paxton noted the support from English fans due to the neighboring relationship. However, she anticipates an even more electric atmosphere in Glasgow. "I imagine it's going to be a bit mental this time around in Glasgow," she added.
Experience in 3x3 Basketball
Paxton is no stranger to the 3x3 format, having represented Scotland at Birmingham 2022 and Great Britain multiple times. Despite a quarter-final exit in Birmingham, she believes the team has grown significantly. "All of us have played at the GB level for the Europe Cup and World Series, so we've got a lot more experience of the set-up of 3x3," she explained.
The power forward, who plays for the Essex Rebels in the Super League Basketball, highlighted the differences between the 5-on-5 and 3x3 formats. "3x3 is so fast-paced. The second the ball is through the basket, the other team is grabbing it and passing it out. You really have to be switched on the whole time," she said.
Home Support in Glasgow
Growing up in Edinburgh, Paxton is excited to perform in front of family and friends. "My family and friends being able to come and watch pretty easily will be really cool. Having that in Glasgow will be even better," she said.
