Arsenal have agreed a deal for youngster Elijah Upson, son of former defender Matt, beating Tottenham to the signing. The 18-year-old centre-back was on Spurs' books and had been offered a professional contract by Roberto De Zerbi's side, but the Gunners pounced to secure his signature.
Upson played 23 times for Tottenham's age-group teams last season, including a start in a 4-1 north London derby win in the Under-18 Premier League. His father Matt, 47, was a Premier League champion with Arsenal in the 2001/02 season and also played for Birmingham, West Ham, Stoke, Leicester and England at the 2010 World Cup.
Shock Move for John Stones
Arsenal are considering a surprise short-term move for free agent John Stones to cover for injured William Saliba. According to The Sun, the Gunners see the England and former Manchester City defender as a cheap fix after losing Saliba for an extended period due to a back injury aggravated at the World Cup.
Stones left City at the end of June after more than a decade at the Etihad. Mikel Arteta, who was part of the coaching staff during Stones' time at City, knows the defender well. French media suggest Saliba could be out for up to five months, making Stones an attractive option. Inter Milan are also interested in the 32-year-old.
Arsenal's Summer Transfers So Far
Piero Hincapie has signed permanently for £34.5million after a successful loan from Bayer Leverkusen. Illan Meslier joined on a free from Leeds United. Karl Hein, Jakub Kiwior and Leandro Trossard have left to free up funds, while Fabio Vieira and Gabriel Jesus are linked with exits.
