Historic Multi-Continent Hosting
For the first time, the World Cup will be staged across Europe, Africa, and South America. The majority of matches will be held in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. However, to celebrate the tournament's centenary, the opening matches will take place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay—a tribute to the first World Cup held in Uruguay in 1930.
Uruguay will host one opening match at the iconic Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, while Argentina and Paraguay will each stage one game before the tournament moves to the primary hosts.
Environmental Concerns
The decision has sparked criticism from environmentalists due to the significant travel distances involved. Critics argue that the carbon footprint of such a spread-out tournament contradicts global sustainability goals.
Future Expansion Hinted
The 2030 edition will retain the 48-team format introduced in 2026. However, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has suggested that the tournament could expand further. “These are all issues that we will be examining after the World Cup,” he said. “When organising a World Cup, it’s important to organise it for the whole world - not just Europe and South America, but effectively the entire world.”
Infantino added, “Every nation should be allowed to dream of participating in the World Cup. You can see that the quality of the teams is extremely high, and it’s getting higher and higher, all over the world. If you don’t give smaller countries a chance to participate in the World Cup, they’ll lack the incentive to keep improving.”
