Bruno Fernandes has rejected a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, opting to remain at Manchester United. Al-Hilal were prepared to pay a £100 million transfer fee and offer the midfielder £1 million per week, a deal that could have earned him up to £200 million.
Talks had accelerated in recent days, with Fernandes’s agent Miguel Pinho holding meetings in Riyadh. Al-Hilal believed they had a genuine chance of securing the Portuguese star, but Fernandes made clear his desire to continue playing at the highest level in Europe.
The decision is a major boost for Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim ahead of next season. Although the potential transfer fee could have aided squad rebuilding, Amorim always insisted he wanted Fernandes to stay.
Amorim recently said of his captain: “You can see by his performances. You can see by his leadership. You can see the passion he has for the game. In difficult moments Bruno is the guy who takes responsibility.”
