A group of Argentina supporters became the victims of a Spanish pilot's merciless joke after he falsely informed them that their nation had triumphed in the World Cup. The aircraft descended into jubilant scenes when Argentinian travellers mistakenly trusted the pilot, who opted to announce his country's success only after initially raising the hopes of the rival fans.
Travellers wearing Argentina shirts leapt from their seats and burst into celebration when the announcement came through the PA system – completely unaware of what would follow. Having booked their flights well in advance, they would have been devastated at missing the live action while airborne, relying entirely on the pilot to relay the outcome of football's most prestigious fixture.
Pilot's Deceptive Announcement
He declared over the intercom that Argentina had secured victory. The euphoric celebrations were abruptly curtailed, however, when the pilot disclosed it was merely a jest and that Spain had in fact claimed the World Cup, according to the Daily Star. The passengers at that moment remained oblivious to how the match had unfolded, including the Spanish side's dominance, a red card and Spain's extra-time winner.
Aftermath of the Prank
The jubilation swiftly gave way to stunned silence as Argentina fans aboard were left heartbroken. The prank was undeniably a bold gamble from the pilot given the result sparked mayhem both on and off the field, with players clashing and Argentinians demonstrating in the streets. It is understood, though, that fortunately for him there was no disturbance on the aircraft.
