Newcastle United eye Said El Mala as Anthony Gordon replacement
Newcastle target Said El Mala to replace Anthony Gordon

Newcastle United are reportedly considering a move for Cologne winger Said El Mala as they look to fill the void left by Anthony Gordon in Eddie Howe's squad. The 19-year-old German Under-21 international has emerged as one of the Bundesliga's most exciting prospects, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 36 appearances across all competitions last season.

El Mala's rise and previous transfer interest

El Mala burst onto the scene last year and was close to joining Brentford in a £50m deal before talks broke down. Despite his youth, Newcastle and Tottenham are both credited with interest in the versatile forward, who can also play as a central striker. A significant fee would be required, but Newcastle have demonstrated a willingness to invest in young talent, and El Mala would join fellow Germans Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw on Tyneside.

Impressions from top German coaches

El Mala has already made a strong impression on leading figures in German football. Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany praised the youngster after a German Cup meeting in October 2025: “If the counter ends with his goal, this boy has a lot to do with it, of course. He’s got that first burst of acceleration, and then a second one in the same move. That surprises many defenders. From that high-speed action, he can get into a shooting position, and he does that very well.”

Germany national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann called El Mala into the senior squad last season. Although he did not take him to the World Cup, Nagelsmann said: “Said made a good impression. I had a close exchange with (U21 coach) Toni Di Salvo. He’s always happy when his players make it to the senior national team, but for his mission, it’s not optimal when his players are away. So we have to find a healthy compromise. Said did well, it was his first time with us. He didn’t have many training sessions, but he made a good impression. I spoke to him at the beginning of the week and we decided he would join the U21s as they have an important game in Georgia.”

Kwasniok's praise for 'God-given talent'

Cologne head coach Lukas Kwasniok is naturally a big fan of the 19-year-old. After El Mala's goal secured a 1-0 win over Hoffenheim last season, Kwasniok said: “He made the decision for me. He trained well and scored three goals during the final training session. Said is a good lad; a street-footballer with God-given talent. That speed and dribbling. Said is so lucky that he has so much to offer.”
