Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary former Manchester United manager, previously advised against making major signings in the January transfer window, warning that such deals rarely provide immediate success. His comments come as the current United side, managed by Ruben Amorim, are linked with several midfield reinforcements in the upcoming window.
United currently sit two points off a Champions League place, but a recent draw with Wolves highlighted ongoing squad deficiencies. According to reports, the club has drawn up an eight-man shortlist of centre midfielders, including Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Brighton's Carlos Baleba, and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton. Other targets include Conor Gallagher, James Garner, Tyler Adams, Joao Gomes, and Ruben Neves.
Ferguson stated in 2012 that no marquee January signing had ever been an instant success, and that clubs rarely get full value in the winter market due to sellers inflating prices. Throughout his tenure, he largely avoided big January moves, though he did sign Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra in January 2006, who took time to settle before becoming stars.
One notable exception was Louis Saha, signed in January 2004, who scored seven goals in 14 games. Bruno Fernandes, another January arrival in 2020, has also been a success. However, Ferguson generally preferred long-term prospects or academy talent over expensive winter fixes.
