Manchester United have identified Scotland international Angus Gunn as a potential signing to serve as second-choice goalkeeper, according to reports. The 30-year-old started all three of Scotland's group matches at the World Cup but was released by Nottingham Forest earlier this summer after making just one appearance for the club.
Gunn, who is available on a free transfer, came through Manchester City's academy when United's director of football Jason Wilcox was a coach there. He left City in 2018 following a loan spell at Norwich City, the club his father Bryan played for when Angus was born. After three years at Southampton, Gunn joined Norwich permanently before being released last summer and picked up by Forest.
United are seeking a new backup to Senne Lammens, who had an impressive first season. The club plans to sell both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana, while Tom Heaton, at 40, is not considered a suitable understudy. Radek Vitek's future is also uncertain after a loan spell at Bristol City. Another goalkeeper on United's radar is Leeds United's Karl Darlow, who is out of contract next week but in talks over a new deal.
Wolves' Sam Johnstone, a United academy graduate, has also been linked. In midfield, United's priority is Michael Carrick's position, but they may miss out on targets Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes due to high fees and Tottenham's interest. However, Atalanta's Ederson is expected to join for £35m after the World Cup.
