Manchester United have reportedly made contact with Borussia Dortmund over a potential move for midfielder Felix Nmecha, less than a week after the summer transfer window closed. The Reds are said to have held initial talks with the Bundesliga club regarding the 25-year-old Germany international.
United's summer midfield overhaul
United brought in four new faces during the summer, with manager Michael Carrick welcoming Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba and Karl Darlow to his squad. Midfield was deemed a priority area for reinforcements, and the club also looked to sign Louis Page from Leicester City on deadline day.
According to Fussball Daten, United have shown an interest in signing Nmecha, with Manchester City and Newcastle United also mentioned as clubs expressing a desire to try and sign him in the future. The report claims Nmecha is seemingly highly likely to leave Dortmund over the next 12 months.
Dortmund's stance and valuation
Dortmund do not want to sell Nmecha in the months ahead, with the midfielder viewed as an “indispensable pillar” in the outfit's midfield. However, were Dortmund to consider an exit, they would demand at least €100million (£86million) for his signature.
Nmecha is contracted to Dortmund until the summer of 2030, meaning the German club will not be under any pressure to sell their star midfielder in January or next summer. He started his career at Manchester City before moving to Wolfsburg in 2021, and his brother Lukas currently plays as a striker for Leeds United.
United's midfield options and future plans
Following the signings of Santos, Tielemans and Baleba, United also have Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte as their senior midfield options, although Ugarte remains sidelined with a serious knee injury. The next recruitment drive is set to focus on defence to complete the three-year INEOS rebuild, which could yet top £500m in transfers.
