Jim Goodwin expressed delight after his Dundee United side edged an eventful clash with Aberdeen, winning 3-2 at Tannadice, but he was left puzzled by the decision to disallow a goal that would have extended their lead. The match, played in difficult conditions caused by Storm Boelo, saw both teams contribute to a spectacle.
United led twice through goals from Zidane Iqbal and Dylan Tait, only for Aberdeen to respond with equalisers from Nesta Guiness-Walker and Connor Ronan. The hosts secured all three points 18 minutes from time when Zas Sapsford scored with a flying header, seven minutes after the Australian had an effort ruled out by VAR for offside.
VAR Decision Questioned
Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, Goodwin criticised the decision to overturn the goal. He said: "I thought it was a terrific game and both sets of players deserve huge amounts of credit."
"No doubt Stephen Robinson and his players will be disappointed not to have taken anything from the game as I thought they were really good at times."
"I am delighted in the manner that we were able to win the game but I'm disappointed that the third goal was chalked off."
Harsh Call and Defensive Resilience
Goodwin described the decision as harsh, noting that some referees would have allowed the goal. He said: "It was a brilliant pass of play from us and I think it's a little bit harsh (to rule it out) if I'm totally honest, having watched it back."
"It's a subjective one as some referees will give it and some will not. And unfortunately today David Dickinson has ruled it out for offside."
Goodwin also praised his team's defensive efforts, particularly centre-backs Michael Forbes and his partner, who faced constant pressure from Aberdeen's crosses. "Michael Forbes was playing with a big gash on the side of his face that needed stitches at half time. That's what you need from their leaders, to put their necks on the line because it's worth it at the end of the day," he added.
The winning goal, scored by Sapsford, was described by Goodwin as "brilliant" and part of a "terrific, all-round performance in really, really difficult conditions."
