Storm Boelo: East Kilbride game abandoned after 29 minutes

East Kilbride boss Mick Kennedy insists Saturday's abandoned game with Cove Rangers should never have gone ahead in the first place after Storm Boelo battered Balmoral Stadium.

Kilby and a small band of dedicated supporters made the treacherous trip up the A90 to Aberdeenshire amid an amber weather warning for high winds and heavy rain.

Despite the conditions, the game went ahead and Kilby found themselves 1-0 up after seven minutes when Jordan White turned the ball into his own net via a wind-assisted corner.

But as the weather worsened, referee Lewis Hogarth took the decision to abandon the game after 29 minutes of play and both sides will need to try again at a later date.

Kennedy questions decision to travel

Kennedy admitted it was the correct call to halt proceedings, but questioned why it wasn't called off before his squad made the journey north.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "I said to the club last night that I wasn't even sure why we were travelling up there when there was an amber weather warning in place."

"When we got there, we kind of felt it was always going to end this way."

"To be fair to the referee, the weather was ridiculous and I don't think it was going to get any better."

Conditions made play impossible

"Even though we went 1-0 up, as a spectacle it wasn't great. You just didn't know what was going to happen and it was probably the right call."

"We went 1-0 up with the wind on our side and, to be honest, I wouldn't have fancied going into the second half trying to defend a 1-0 lead in those conditions."

"So it is one of those situations where you feel you'd rather go up another time when the conditions are better because so much is out of your control."

"It is difficult for the players as well because you are constantly making mistakes because of the wind."

"From the first kick-off, Cove tried to launch the ball forward and it almost blew straight back into their own half so that wasn't a great start!"

"It was ridiculous to try and play a game of football in that."

Rescheduled date and other results

"It will probably be a Tuesday in November or December now, but we'll just have to deal with that."

Elsewhere in League One, the other fixtures survived the storm. Hamilton Academical remained joint-top of the table with Ross County after a 2-1 win at home to East Fife. County were 4-0 victors over Airdrieonians, Queen of the South beat Alloa 1-0 and Montrose defeated Peterhead 3-0.
