Thomas Tuchel has reportedly lodged an immediate complaint with the Football Association after FIFA handed defender Jarell Quansah a two-match suspension for the World Cup. The England manager is said to be furious at the decision, which he believes was based on incomplete evidence.
FIFA's Sanction and Tuchel's Reaction
FIFA's disciplinary committee confirmed the ban on Thursday, ruling that Quansah's challenge on Mexico's Jesus Gallardo during a group-stage match endangered an opponent. According to Sky Sports, Tuchel's anger stems from the fact that referee Alireza Faghani was initially shown a still image of Quansah's studs making contact with Gallardo's shin. Tuchel argues that had the referee been shown a video clip, he would have seen that Quansah touched the ball before the contact.
Mitigation Argument Rejected
While IFAB regulations do not necessarily consider such mitigation when a player endangers an opponent, Tuchel believes the video evidence could have influenced the decision. The Three Lions are unable to appeal the ban, leaving Tuchel frustrated. The FA has been asked to formally express their displeasure over the disciplinary process.
Impact on England's World Cup Campaign
Quansah, a key defensive option for England, will miss the next two matches, potentially including a crucial knockout stage fixture. Tuchel must now adjust his squad selection and tactics to compensate for the absence. The incident has sparked debate about the use of still images versus video in disciplinary decisions.
