Tommy Fury is poised to receive a WBC world ranking at cruiserweight following his exhibition victory over former World's Strongest Man Eddie Hall earlier this month in Manchester. The fight, contested at heavyweight, saw Fury outpoint Hall over the distance.
WBC President Backs Ranking
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told Betway that Fury deserves a top-15 spot, stating: “I think so. They're a fighting family. I think even the father could be ranked. He's unbelievable. They are brave, they are strong, so absolutely.” Sulaiman added: “I think he has the merits. We like everything that has to do with crossover, with its support. Let's make it interesting. Let's understand the current times while respecting boxing at the same time. So, I'm all up for that, and we'll see what the ratings committee will do for next month's rankings.”
The WBC previously faced criticism for ranking social media star Jake Paul, which made him eligible for a world title shot. Fury's potential ranking follows a similar path, despite lacking a recognised professional opponent on his record.
Tyson Fury Calls for Title Shot
Tommy’s brother, heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, called on Sulaiman to rank Tommy in the top 15 at light heavyweight or cruiserweight. “Tommy is a real fighter,” Tyson told iFL TV. “I’d like Mauricio Sulaiman to rank him in the top 15 in the light heavyweight or cruiserweight division. Tommy would have a good fight with Noel Mikaelian, the WBC champion. Tommy has the ability to beat him...I think a world title shot for Tommy next, maybe.”
Champion Responds
WBC cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian responded by agreeing to fight Tommy, but with a condition: “If your brother wants a title shot, I am up for it if Mauricio gives me my voluntary defence back, since I haven't heard anything back from the team I was supposed to fight. But only if you vouch to fight me next. You love the cruiserweights, don’t you?”
The WBC ratings committee is expected to consider Fury’s ranking at their next monthly meeting.
