Australian Open Spectator Alleges Racist Abuse in Stands During Match
Tennis Fan Alleges Racist Attack at Australian Open

A distressing incident has reportedly marred the atmosphere at the prestigious Australian Open, with a tennis fan alleging she was subjected to a racial attack in the stands while attending with two young children. The woman, who identifies as Joanne on social media platform TikTok, has shared her account online, sparking concerns about spectator behaviour at major sporting events.

Allegations of Racial Vilification Emerge

According to Joanne's detailed post, the alleged abuse occurred on Day 8 of the tournament during a day session. She was seated in Section 7, Row J, for the first match when the situation began. After sitting down, she felt warm from walking and brushed her hair back a few times, which apparently provoked a reaction from the man seated directly behind her.

The man reportedly spoke to her in a very rude manner, demanding she tie her hair up and claiming her hair had touched his hand. Upset by his aggressive tone, Joanne responded by suggesting he check the spectator rules regarding movement. To avoid further conflict, she moved to an empty seat nearby, but the man allegedly said, 'You'd better,' in a confrontational way.

Situation Escalates with Racial Remarks

Feeling unfairly treated, Joanne returned to her original seat, at which point the situation escalated dramatically. The woman seated behind her allegedly made a series of racial remarks, repeatedly telling Joanne to 'go back to your country' and 'go back to China.'

Joanne described these comments as 'extremely offensive and clearly racially discriminatory.' Prior to this exchange, the couple had reportedly taken photos of Joanne without her consent. When she asked them to delete the images and they refused, she took photos of them in return, which she later shared online.

Children Witness Alleged Abuse

What made the experience particularly distressing for Joanne was that she was accompanied by her 12-year-old son and her friend's son, who had just arrived from Los Angeles that morning. Being subjected to racial abuse in front of children at an international sporting event like the Australian Open was described as shocking, upsetting, and completely unacceptable.

In her TikTok post, which she described as her first on the platform, Joanne explained her decision to speak up: 'I decided to speak up and share this experience because silence protects the wrong people. I will keep posting my life here. I want my voice to be heard. I will not be silenced.'

Tennis Australia's Inclusion Policies Under Scrutiny

Joanne also posted an image of Tennis Australia's inclusion policies displayed during the Australian Open, which state: 'A place where everyone is welcome. The AO has zero tolerance for anti-social behaviour including any form of racism, homophobia, sexism and transphobia. If you see or hear anti-social behaviour, report it.'

This juxtaposition between the stated policies and the alleged incident raises questions about implementation and enforcement at major sporting events. It remains unclear whether an official complaint was made to tournament organisers or what action, if any, has been taken in response to these allegations.

The Daily Mail has reportedly contacted both Joanne and Tennis Australia for comment regarding the incident. As international attention focuses on spectator behaviour at sporting events, this case highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring inclusive environments for all attendees.
