The Tartan Army, thousands strong in Boston, is urging Scotland's national team to put past disappointments behind them and secure the necessary result against Morocco on Friday. Despite qualifying for 12 major tournaments, Scotland has never advanced past the group stage. With the expanded 48-team World Cup allowing the eight best third-placed teams through, fans believe this is their best chance yet.
Fans Confident of Progress
Davy Bowman, 51, a business analyst from Irvine, is optimistic: "No doubt about it, this group are getting out of this group. This is the difference between previous Scotland teams and this one. It's like a club atmosphere the boys have got now." He recalled a video of captain Andy Robertson saying players travel early to enjoy a pint together before games, like normal guys who are very good at football. Bowman predicts a draw will be enough.
Jay Doherty, also 51, is more bullish: "I honestly think we will win it. This is a proper team, there's no individuals. I'm predicting a 1-0 win."
Weather Forces Fan Zone Closure
Organizers closed the large fan zone in Boston city center on Thursday due to blustery conditions reminiscent of Scotland's climate. Graham Kerr, 40, an auditor from Clarkston, was touring the Freedom Trail with his family to ease nerves. He said: "We've had an absolutely brilliant trip so far. It's a huge game on Friday. To be honest, I would take a draw. Morocco are champions of the African Cup of Nations and got a draw against Brazil. But after beating Haiti, we just have to be at it from the off."
Kerr believes four points from the next two games will be enough: "This is our best chance to get out of a group. The fact it's the first World Cup with three teams going through means three points might even suffice."
Young Fans Share Excitement
Reece Docherty, 27, and Mac Daniels, 26, have been enjoying Boston. Daniels said: "We've been based in Providence and Boston having a great time. We drank way too much last night! We've got tickets for Friday and just can't wait." Docherty, wrapped in a flag reading 'This Is Our Time', added: "You have to believe this is the team to do it. We have so many talismans: Grant Hanley, John McGinn, Scott McTominay. It has to happen."
Elaine Duncan, 60, and family from Dunfermline are planning to tailgate before the match. Andrew Duncan, 27, said: "We're confident but I can't say if we will win. I'm predicting a 1-1. Come on Scotland!"
Late Arrivals Join the Party
Daniel Wales, 34, and wife Yasmine, 33, from Edinburgh, just arrived in Boston. Daniel said: "We've been watching everyone out here and we've been so jealous. We're going to Miami too but can't wait for Friday. We'll get the result we need. It suits us playing a team like Morocco. I can see it being a backs-to-the-wall game. I'd bite your hand off for a 0-0 just now. Come on Scotland!"
