Dominik Szoboszlai has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool that will keep him at Anfield until 2031. The Hungary international captain has agreed to a five-year extension, rewarding his progress since joining from RB Leipzig for £60 million three years ago.
Contract Negotiations and Key Player Status
Liverpool opened talks with Szoboszlai's representatives earlier this year, aiming to extend his deal beyond the two years remaining on his previous contract. Negotiations resumed a few weeks ago, and the 25-year-old has now put pen to paper on an improved five-year contract.
Szoboszlai has emerged as a key player for Liverpool, becoming a regular under Jurgen Klopp before playing a crucial role in the Premier League title triumph under Arne Slot in the 2024/25 season. He demonstrated his versatility during a difficult last campaign by featuring in several positions, including right-back, and was named the club's player of the season.
Performance and Future Role
The midfielder has made 147 appearances for the Reds, scoring 28 goals and providing 24 assists. He is among the candidates to be named vice-captain following the recent departure of Andy Robertson. According to Liverpool FC, Szoboszlai's new contract is a major boost for new head coach Andoni Iraola as he assesses his squad ahead of his first campaign in charge.
Midfield Situation and Other Contracts
While Ryan Gravenberch signed a six-year contract earlier in the year, Curtis Jones has entered the last 12 months of his current deal, and Wataru Endo is poised to become a free agent next summer. Alexis Mac Allister, like Szoboszlai, is in the last two years of his contract, but no talks have been held over a new deal amid continued speculation of interest from Real Madrid.
