Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni claimed that England's self-doubt was the decisive factor in his team's 2-1 comeback victory in the World Cup semi-final. The Albiceleste trailed 1-0 early in the second half after Anthony Gordon's opener but rallied with goals from substitutes Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez.
Scaloni's Tactical Masterstroke vs Tuchel's Caution
While Thomas Tuchel faced criticism for defensive substitutions and a negative response to England's lead, Scaloni's bold changes were widely praised. Matchwinner Martinez came off the bench alongside Rodrigo De Paul and Gonzalo Montiel, who helped pin England back in the latter stages. Scaloni revealed he sensed a mental fragility in the English side, stating: "We were under pressure a bit, but the opponent doubted themselves. We smelt blood and went for it. We all felt it."
Argentina's Dramatic Turnaround
The defending champions had been staring elimination in the face after Gordon's strike, but Fernandez equalised before Martinez completed the turnaround. Scaloni noted the ball "went in after hitting the post twice," describing a "vacuum inside England's goal." He emphasised that the comeback demonstrated more than tactical prowess: "After England scored we showed a lot about our football. It's more than tactics and playing pretty football."
Road to the Final Against Spain
Argentina will now face Spain in the final, a formidable opponent that defeated France in the other semi-final. Scaloni promised his side would give everything, calling on fans to celebrate the achievement. "The people of Argentina should celebrate being in a final. This group of players is difficult to describe in words. They are so special," he said emotionally. "We're going to try to win the final. But what else does this team need to do?"
Substitutes Prove Decisive
The manager highlighted the impact of his bench, with all three goalscorers and key contributors coming on as substitutes. "The players who entered off the bench were so important. Going home knowing that they gave everything is what football is all about," Scaloni added. Argentina seek their fourth World Cup title and second consecutive crown, having won the 2022 tournament.
