Manchester City youngster Nico O'Reilly is set to face Lionel Messi and Argentina in the World Cup final, a match that could sway the club's thinking on his future position. The 19-year-old, who has excelled as a left-back after coming through the academy as an attacking midfielder, has already impressed against top Premier League wingers and now faces the ultimate test.
O'Reilly's Unlikely Rise at Left-Back
O'Reilly's breakthrough came under Pep Guardiola, who deployed him at left-back—a move that surprised even his academy coach. The teenager adapted quickly, learning defensive duties on the job. "The defending side was the bit I had to get used to because I wasn't familiar with it and had to learn it," O'Reilly told the Manchester Evening News. "It's definitely learning on the job."
His performances culminated in scoring both goals in the Carabao Cup final and winning the Young Player of the Year award. He also made his England debut and earned a spot in the World Cup squad.
Facing Messi: A Defining Moment
O'Reilly, who had just turned one when Messi starred in his first World Cup, now faces the legendary forward in the final. The encounter could be a career-defining moment. City have seen O'Reilly unfazed by challenges, and his performance against Messi may influence whether he remains at left-back or moves to midfield, his preferred position.
"I had a lot of help from Josko [Gvardiol], Ruben [Dias] and all these leaders," O'Reilly said. He has already bested Mohamed Salah, Bukayo Saka, and others, naming Everton's Iliman N'Diaye as his toughest opponent so far.
Future Position Uncertain
While O'Reilly expects to eventually move into midfield as a No.8, his success at left-back—where he excels in duels and carrying the ball—may convince City to keep him there. A strong showing against Messi could solidify that decision. The World Cup final represents both a daunting challenge and an opportunity for O'Reilly to shape his club future.
